What is the Subaru AWD?

The influence of the Horizontally opposed engine on driving

The following explains the differences between mounting position and rotation balance for each engine type. Please view the movie below.

None of these engines is equipped with a balancer, so they could all be called "bare". However, only the Horizontally-Opposed Engine runs smoothly without excess vibration. The advantages of the Horizontally-Opposed Engine are low vibration due to the superb rotary balance, and the fact that engine itself is very compact. This allows the engine to be mounted in a position that is lower than possible with other engine layouts.

Superb rotary balance and low centre of gravity. These make Subaru AWD driving unlike that of a vehicle equipped with any other type of engine.
